Hey folks. Relatively new to CTA.

I am creating animations based off of phone scripts. Customer calls in and rep handles phone call. My question is related to which editor to use for subtle motions (G2 character). For example, one movie is a customer on the phone. She gets heated and displays some sort of emotions (waving arms, shaking head, pointing finger, etc.). Setting key frames throughout the movie each time I want to display a movement or head shake gets pretty taxing on the system (and I'm running a new"er" Mac). Movies are generally 5-6 minutes.

Is there another way to accomplish the same without using the 3d editor? Maybe I'm missing something.

Just because they are a G2 character does not mean you have to use the 3D editor.
if you plan on recording the character in the same angle the entire time, it's faster to use the 2D editor.  Or you can do certain portions of the script from a different  angle, and compile them together using a video editor.  The same applies for Camera animation.
