I know the concept behind bases. Typically they are mesh of props or clothing which generally do not have materials or substances applied. Typically they are used as a starting mesh for others to apply custom textures, substances and even opacity maps to make a unique item from the base. For example, some G6 Cloth and the Plain White CC bases are all designed to be used by the content developer to create unique looks by adding materials, substance and/or opacity.

When content is uploaded it is possible to mark the content as a base. What does this actually do? As far as I know, any content, regardless if it is marked as a base or not, can have the existing textures/substance replaced and/or an opacity map added. I believe that one of the things that selecting the item as a base does is put that item into the list of available bases so that when someone creates textures/substances/opacity files for a particular base, they can indicate the base as a requirement so that it shows up as a base requirement in the Marketplace. Are there other differences between an item who can have textures/substances/opacity file replaced but is not marked as a base and the same item that is marked as a base?
