When you view the character on the stage, depending upon the position and angle the character is at, you may be looking at sprites for different angles that what you were looking at in Composer Mode.
The one sprite you changed to empty was only for the one angle. The upper body (i.e. shirt) has 8 angles thus 8 sprites (images).
Try using the layering in Stage Mode rather than Compose Mode, you might have better success.
