What is uncanny valley? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cZIaUEmnLI)
I am a huge fan of iclone because of its simplicity and power but then when people publish their iclone movie it looks little creepy.
For a while i don't understand the reason i thought people who make movies from iclone are not that good at animation and other stuff but after a long research i realize that i was wrong. Ermm then i thought iclone isn't capable of making goo animated movies than toon maker 2 arrived and i knew why people can't even stand before cg movies made with maya (I know now some people will say there is no compare of maya and iclone).
At least iclone can do much better than xtranormal did. Some weeks ago i found out why iclone isn't able to perform it's best, because iclone's human likeness it is falling into uncanny vally.

what I want from developers that they also concentrate upon toon maker (make proper library currently there are only 4 or 5 base figures 10-12 set of cloths etc.)

*Hope you do something..................

RL is yet to realise how good ICLONE could be as a Toon tool.
But I guess, guys showing interest in Toons are a minority here.

That's why there is not much thrust on Toon Shaded rendering or Envelope Based Body Morph for fancy Toons.

The Single Light based Global Toon Rendering in ICLONE is smart but it has certain inherent problems.

ICLONE must allow Per Object Line thickness like it allows Per Object Fill. Then the animator can decide where not to use Outline. For example, Hair, Eyelashes and Water could do without Outline.

But I guess they have their own priority based on the market demand.

Uncanny Valley :

You got such feelings because of the "STARE LOOK" of most of the G5 ICLONE characters. I hope G6 would be better.

Try DAZ characters in ICLONE you will not have such feeling.

Besides that I feel most ICLONE animators are too eager to render and upload a version for sharing with the community without working on the facial expressions. If people work on the facial expression this Uncanny Valley feeling will be marginalised.

Why are people always so concerned about the Uncanny Valley effect? It is a filmmaker's choice, not inherent to a product, such as iClone.

I know there are those that think that animation should look a certain way and no other, but I think that is limiting yourself unnecessary. Fortunately, there are many different ways in which animation is expressed through many different mediums, if you know where to look.

What I like about iClone is that there are indeed many possible looks: surreal, semi-realistic, epic, toon, etc. It's all in the artist's hands. Just check the "Showcase yourself" section.

The toon shader was introduced after iClone had been around for some time. It could certainly be improved and should, but as an alternative look among many possible iClone looks, not as a remedy against a presumed "Uncanny Valley" syndrome.

And who knows, with a plugin architecture in IC6, the door may be opened to all kinds of render options, including a serious toon shader. I would support that and might even use it myself.

well said animagic, i find it almost contest like to make a video that's "huh huh, looks real eh ? " ...you get 1 yeah wow, and they never look at it again because it's been done since before star wars.

Don't worry about uncanny valley, be more concerned about actually being entertaining! Tongue

just cut to the chase and take a real life picture, then tell everyone you made it in iclone, and call it a day, much less frustrating and less expensive than trying to get one realistic render people will soon forget.

100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, is a realistic render going to make you shine ???

here's a clue - NO

non realistic render 114million views - totally brainless animation of a cat made out of a pop-tart farting rainbows... with a track that lady gaga won't soon be singing on!!

In the World of 60FPS super realistic Animations, I am actually starting to do many series in 24FPS with Toon Shaded animations.

Some people may find it funny.

But it's my conscious decision to tell the world my stories in certain manner.

Similary, many people love the ICLONE look.

Discussing about the uncanny valley or any technical aspect is not an offence and definitely not an effort to ridicule anybody or anybody's work.

It's a pure Technical and Clinical discussion to understand the probable reasons.

May be there is an answer. The users video are usually not very .... let's say no suitable for professional distribution to be politically correct because of reallusion...iclone is an incredible animation tool but some field are just terrible . I have 2 licences of iclone 5 and 1 licence of iclone 6 , i don't know what to do with iclone 6 but I used iclone 5 for 5 months now and each day is making me say that iclone is a professional animation tool used by most of the time by hobbyist/amateur. In my opinion there are 3 main points that need to be fixed

1. they should hire a cg render specialist to increase the internal renderer quality as iclone 6
is now using dx11 , the possibilities are unlimited. I don't know if it's a strategy or they do no master it but when i look at the website and the facebook page , they use to post poor quality images and render and they seem very proud of it (bad lighting, overexposed, etc etc) . Especially with this Indigo RT miscellaneous. It's not fast and i do not use iclone for render still images , if i need still image there are many other (better) solutions like blender cycles (free) or maya etc

2. they should make a more strict curating in the market place like Daz or Epic etc do , some of the assets are very very low quality ( models ,motions etc) it's automatically leads to low quality final products when used by users.

3.reallusion should produce a complete hi quality short movie that will be used as demo for iclone 6.The best way to explain is to show...real professional need groundbreaking products to make them look at it.Otherwise iclone will be underrated until the end of time.

Personally i'm working on 3 big projects with iclone one short film rendering and one feature film, and a big RPG game project as animator and i use iclone for it (the best animation soft ever) , i hope i will be able to show them here when finished. I expected too much from iclone 6 but now i have to continue to make my rendering with Unreal and Cryengine indigo RT is not a good solution for the moment.
