So now I come to the next step in my project. What is the best way to make workable tail props for my characters? I've found that the tails provided by I-clone are not adequate to suit my needs. Or does anyone know where I can just buy a tail prop to save me the trouble?

make one and rig it ...tails are pretty easy to make.

from there you can either add springs to it ..or use the character animator plug in and manually animate it.

intermediate skill since you have to use a 3rd party software like sculptris to model and texture the the tail and blender or daz to rig the tail. - all of which free - but not exactly straight forward easy to use.

I think I'd rank the skill level a bit higher.  True, tails are a straight-forward chain of bones, potentially, but if you've never done your own rigging before, never used DAZ or Blender before... as you said yourself, not exactly straight forward and easy to use.

Achievable?  Absolutely!!!  I was only concerned about setting expectations correctly for someone who hasn't done it before.  Once you've rigged a character or prop, I agree a tail should not be too difficult.

It's the first time that's a killer.  (Not everyone is as extraordinary as you.)

Still would like to know...what kind of tail for what kind of creature...Wink

I found this "ponytail" in the "Hair Element" folder in the Accessories for Avatar's...
not sure where it came from.

It does have collision problems which could be worked around.
It was attached to her head I just attached it to her....you knowTongueTongueTongueTongue

@JV - lol ....well I ranked it intermediate because there are other 3D tasks that are simply mind boggling in comparison

for 3D in general , I have a good grasp of the concepts - what I don't get is how so many of these software convolute their implementation. All the secrets you want to know of just about everything is in the basic lessons, this is where the essence of whatever you want to learn is found...that is the point where masters complete their lessons full circle, and learn to become grandmasters! - the problems come when other people give you their interpretation of it lol Tongue

the first question a noob student should be asked is "Why are you here ?"
The last question a master should answer before going grand master is "Why are you here ?"

There are many possible tails. Ting, one of the dancers in the Dream Girls Pack has a dynamic tail (as accessory).

It has a nice movement, but no collision detection. works quite well otherwise.

Hi!(^_-)

>A tail for a reptilian creature.
I also sometimes look for this kind of Prop. Did you check "Monster Workshop"?
http://www.reallusion.com/ContentStore/iClone/pack/MonsterWorkshop/default.aspx
This plug-in contains some tails and two or more methods to move a tail.

If you have 3DXChange5 Pro/Pipeline and DazStudio4, you should also search
the name of "Rawart".
Although there are some figures which can be used as a tail,
there is a demerit in which adjustment of a scale is difficult in iClone5.
http://www.daz3d.com/drakon

I feel that the way of thinking using other Prop(s) as a tail is also important.

Here is a quickly constructed tail that didn't take an enormous amount of time. By using the posing ability designed specifically for it, collisions can be avoided.

The Pony tail is from the Reallusion Spring hair, it was just linked in to the existing to show the range of options.

Not a great sample, as I'm working on other things, but this does work quite well and is skinned fairly smooth so it works better than some I have seen in the past.
