How to convert 3D objects from Poser to iClone through 3DXchange?

Step 1. Prepare the scene

Pose the figure and arrange the scene as you want. The light and camera settings can be ignored since they will be excluded while converted with 3DXchange

*Notice: most of the Poser models comprise tens of thousands of polygons which are not optimized for real-time rendering environment like iClone. So keep your scene as simple and light as possible.Instead of exporting the whole scene, we suggest you export one figure or one prop at a time and save them as separate files.

Step 2. Export the scene

Select File>Export>Wavefront OBJ...,

In the "Export Range" dialog box, select "Single frame" to export current frame's snapshot, or "Multi frame export" to export still model files from assigned frame range.

The next dialog box "Select objects" let you decide which objects to be exported. Usually the "GROUND" object are unchecked to exclude the ground plane from the exported scene.

In the "Export Options" dialog box, check "Weld body part seams" option and leave the others unchecked. With this setting, the object will be exported as a single seamless mesh which can be "smoothed" in 3DXchange.

*Note: If there are multiple objects in the scene and you want them to be exported as separate nodes, check the "Include existing groups in polygon groups" option.

Click "OK" and choose the destination folder to export the obj mtl file. The obj file contains the mesh data and the mtl file defines the material settings.

Step 3. Collect map images

Though the accompanying mtl file defines material settings and texture maps, the texture image files are not exported with the obj file.
You have to collect the image files and put them in the same folder as the obj and mtl files.

To do this:
Open the mtl files with any text editor (like Windows Notepad).
Search those lines start with "map", and note the image file name (XXX.jpg) in these lines. They are texture images used in the exported model.

Go to Poser's runtime texture folder (default path: C:\Program Files\e frontier\Poser 7\Runtime\Textures), then the folder with the same name as the figure (ex. James, Beb 2 ...etc). Find those image files defined in the mtl file in this folder, copy them to the same folder containing the exported the obj and mtl files. If you can't find the needed image files in the said path, try search them under "\Runtime\Textures\" folders.

Now all the file needed for conversion are ready.

Step 4. Convert obj into iClone vns format

Run iClone 3dXchange.

Load the exported obj file. It may take a few minutes to process the mesh data if the model has a huge polygon count.
If it shows the "missing texture" message, please find them as described in Step 3.

Due to the unit system difference, the models form Poser are usually very tiny in 3dXchange, to get a propor scale, do the following:

In the "Scene Transform" panel, increase the "Scale" value (with "Lock XYZ" on) to, say 30000. You can turn the "Dummy" display on for scaling reference.

3DXchange will apply the default specularity values to the obj files from Poser which contain no specularity data.
Adjust the color or specularity if needed.

If the result is satisfactory, choose File>Export or click the "Export iClone File" button to export the vns file. Another good way to export Poser content for iClone is using DAZ|Studio. It saves your time to collect the texture image files. See the DAZ|Studio session for details.

I am new at this. I see that you show a character in the example but can you actually use a character. The only export options are props, accessories, and 3d scenes. How do you use a character from Poser through 3dxchange in iclone.

Hello .. this is really cool way ..
but any model will come inside of iclone just as one piece one model !

i wish to get it fully controlled like to be animated exactly how poser do or did , and able to apply animation by Iclone

any idea ?

Hi,

3DXchange is not able to import fully animated poser characters that you can add motions to and use them the same as the G1 or G2 characters. For that you would need to use 3DS Max and rig and skin the figure with the RL Bone system first.

As has already been noted 3DXchange is for importing Props, Accessories or 3D Scenes.
