Ok, Hopefully I explained this clearly enough
1 - open a free website service,
the one I use is called
www.zymic.com
its a decent service, high bandwidth and lots of space, the downside is their servers go down every so often. So i ultimately set up a few sites with them, when one server goes down, i merely update another site as a back up. It's free, so there is always a compromise lol
2 - I upload my files with an FTP program,
many good free ones you can find here, some better for macs, some better for pc's etc...
you can find them at download.com
here's a quick search i did based on free/ windows versions
http://tinyurl.com/2f8pqpmwidget cast interface
A - Export Location - this is where you click the folder ( E ) and navigate to your projects folder.
I usually keep a same structure as my online server to keep things in order and easy to understand. so if for example on my hard drive I have
c:/website/widgets/photogallerywidget
My website folder will be
http://www.mywebsitename/widgets/photogallerywidget
/widgets will be where all your widgets are located
/photogallerywidget is the name of my specific widget / project.
this just makes life less confusing when you maintain several widgets, it just visually matches when you are on your ftp.
Now you go to your FTP client, and save the same exact structure
B - Hosting URL - this is the location on the hosting server that the widget is on this is where you place the name of the exact directory your project will be hosted.
In this case
http://www.mywebsitename.com/widgets/photogallerywidget
C: widget name, the name of your widget
Photo Gallery Widget - or Photogallerywidget if you wish to keep it visually consistent in the hard drive
D: share options - This turns on or off the pop up tab that lets people have the code to your widget for sharing. I like turning it off for wix for aesthetic purposes. You could always post a link to another page that has the code for people to copy, its just more visually pleasing with the pop up, but the pop up can cause problems when you are embedding your widgetcast widget into tight exact size spaces.
Export the file and now manually navigate to the directory...you will see a bunch of extra folders that widget cast exported.
Fire up your FTP client - Note - in this screen cap my project name is "Links" not "Photogallerywidget" I used an actual project I was using for screen caps...and just made up the photogallerywidget for example.
F - my local computer directories
G - my server directory
upload the entire contents of the directory widget cast made in your drive ...to your server.
Note: I named my folder and project "Links" widgetcast used My links folder in my pc to make it's own Links folder, this is not a mistake.
On your server you make a directory in this case "widgets/links" then drag the contents of your links folder on your hard drive and allow it to make the links folder and its subfolders that widgetcast made. I just drag everything.
H - In your pc project folder - widgetcast will export an html file - open it up with notepad , and that is where you find your new embed code ( I )
-
This system works especially well for me, because once you place the embed code once, as long as you keep the project name and locations the same, it will automatically update any places you embedded your widget, so you do not have to re-embed anything, it automatically updates everytime you drag your updated project in the same directory structure on your online host / server.
One more note - whenever you update your project, make sure to delete the old export in your hard drive - for some reason widgetcast does not over write old projects. For your online server / host, it will overwrite old files.
Please feel free to ask any questions
next, the wix question
