Do you mean "choppy" in the real time preview window or in your rendered video?

For the preview window you can turn on the FPS counter under preferences (the hammer icon). This will give you a good idea of the frame rate you are getting. Anything less than 15 will look a bit choppy on screen. The reasons for this can be down to the number of characters and props in your scenes or may be down to the graphics card in your computer.

For the rendered output make sure you choose a frame rate of 25 (Pal) or 30 (NTSC) if you want the action to be smooth. Again lower settings may look a bit choppy.
