Have you tried using one of the pre-set motion clips or by doing your own puppeteering to get the desired results. If you use puppeteering then you can decide how subtle the head movement is for your character and have total control.

Also try adjusting the Intensity slider to make the movement less expressive. Cricky made a good post about this recently and the same process can be used in your case. Check it out from the link below.
