Just got Computer Shopper (UK mag) with iClone2 SE on the dvd.
To my surprise it's installed and loaded with no problems in wine on Linux.
Now to see what it does.

Thanks for passing on the information. That will be off interest to the Linux users out there who may want to run iClone.

That was the good news. Now for the bad news, the screen where the characters, scene, etc., are loaded into remains black, so you can't do anything.

I've downloaded iClone 2.5 (trial version) to see if there's any difference but it's the same
Thought it was too good to be true.

Now, that's said and done, time to see if we can get it working fully.
Does anyone know what backend iClone uses for the screen or is all the code written by iClone themselves?

Most of the graphics issues seem related to the linux video drivers;
Nvidia cards seem to work best for anything 3d in Wine, as most things work.
ATI has far more work to do with their linux drivers, and at this point I cant recommend ATI for 3D under Wine or linux.

The arrival of Windows 7 "aka Vista SP2" should improve the chances of seeing more good apps like this move over to Linux. If you thought Vista was a pig... well... Windows 7 is the same pig with lots of lipstick, and a fancy dress.

Bit of curve ball, but with Windows 7 being launched today and yet ever better options going on in the "free" world, I wonder if iClone 4 will work under Linux? Has there been any testing?

Having had Vista thrust onto me with Office 2007 and spent two years having to downgrade and export every darn word I write, I would love to go Linux, Open Office, and happy Clone4 instead of fighting for RAM.

Kind regards,

Alex

It is very unlikely that you would get flawless performance using iClone4 and Linux. iClone is designed for a Windows environment only. Personally I have been using iClone on Vista since its release and haven't encountered any problems. Nor with any other software I use. I really don't understand the downer people have with the OS.

the problem with linux is there are so many versions which one do you support? and don't forget about drivers and how often they get refreshed

Well I was happy with Windows 5.1 (which really was revolutionary at the time). There is very little I do now in terms of word processing, accounting, spreadsheets and database work that I could not do then. Just imagine how fast that OS would run under today's technology.

That being said and accepting Reallusion's choice of direction, has IC4 been thoroughly tested with Windows 7 - being as, so far, reviews of that system seem to be overwhelmingly positive?

Kind regards,

Alex
