I've created some characters with AC3D over the past few months. I just recently purchased iClone 2 and 3D Exchange. I've tried to convert the characters to use in iClone, but they will only convert as props, accessories, or scenes. Is there a way to do this?

I won't spend hundreds of dollars to purchase characters that I have already created and if I'm unable to use them with iClone, then I've wasted my money with buying iClone and the 3D Exchange programs.

Sadly 3DXchange won't be able to convert your characters to full iClone characters as this process requires the figures to be rigged with the RL Bone system used in iClone.

Currently you would need 3DS Max (or Maya?) to rig the bones and skin the figures using the max templates available from the developer center.

Sorry this is not what you wanted to hear but at present this is the only way.

Thank you for your answer. Now another question:

Do either the 3D Max or Maya programs allow for import and conversion to their file extensions? And, if I understand correctly, once converted and the rigid bones and textures are applied, I should be able to convert them to the .vns file type for use in iClone?

3DS Max or Maya are not able to import or open existing iClone characters in the .VNS format.

To create new original characters for iClone requires the download of the Max Templates. This comprises of one male and one female G1 figure in .max format and also a dummy figure which just contains the bones.

You can choose to base your work on the generic male or female characters or design a completely new figure from scratch and rig that with the RL bones.

The G1 Max Templates are free to download as long as you are a registered iClone owner and a member of the CCD (which is also free to join). G2 Max Templates (latest figures) are available to CCD published artists only at present.

Hi Peter,

What do you think about a tool in a next release which can attach the bones from a character taken on Wharehouse (for example), to an iclone character ,inside ICLONE ??

Something like ANTICS, you know what i mean...

We dont need 3Dmax, We have a wide choice of characters on Google for example......An easier way to create stories with ICLONE.

With the last release of iclone, it should be a real advantage fir REALLUSION and the customers.....

Congratulations for the team ,about the last release.........

Hi Serger,

It would certainly be great to have an automated bone fixture process for characters in iClone but that is not possible just yet. What you do have in iClone 3 is customizable body shapes so that you can take one of the stock figures and adjust individual body parts (within reason ) to create your own custom character.

Thanks for your feedback.
