Anyone have any tips for creating a completely underwater atmosphere? I want to do some deep sea scenes with large submarines and I'm wondering what would be a good way to setup a scene for this kind of effect. I'm going to try some fogging and colored ambient lighting, but is there something else built-in to iClone that would help me make this even more convincing? I'm assuming there is no refraction effect, but maybe there is.

Hey scott,
a good start would be using a Water object and film with the camera under it. There is also a particle emitter that makes it look that like there are caustics going on there. There is also a bubble particle emitter as well. All of these things will make you sell the underwater feel. Another thing you can do is attach a plane surface in front of the camera and add one of the video bump maps to it and turn refraction on. This will distort the water. I'll create an image tonight to show what i mean.

Hope this helped,

Good tips. I'm not sure about the water object thing though. I added water to the scene and it looks great from the top, but once under the surface plane it doesn't do anything to the scene at all. Unless I'm missing something.

I'm not sure if this will help but why not download it and see. It is fully customable.

That's a really nice scene. However, I'm doing deep sea scenes so I don't even need to see the water surface and I won't have that kind of lighting. The wavy water effect will definitely be useful.
