Hi all,

I am curious to know if it is possible to create an avatar using a 3d model that I have imported into Google Sketchup.  It would be cool if it is.  If so, how do I do this?  Thanks.

Steve

Hi Steve. I think this would answer your question. You would need 3DXchange and to be able to break your model up into body pieces ie. head, left hand, left lower arm, left upper arm etc. You would import your model into 3DXchange which would then export it (in individual pieces) as an iClone compatible model. Then using the CloneBone feature in the iClone program you can rebuild your model on the bone skeleton which then would allow you to animate your character as you would any other avatar.

Hope this helps.

Whoops. You forgot facial animation.

Unless something totally unexpected appears in iClone 4, such an avatar would be a walking advertisement for Botox (R).

another thought is to use a standard nude avatar, make the skin transparent, and attach the imported parts to the limbs as accessories - you might have a human like head but with texture mapping you can make it look something else but will have facial expresion

Afterthought is correct...The CloneBone character will speak. It has a Jawbone connection.

Hi all,

First of all thanks for the replies.  It's nice to know that someone is listening .  I thought more about this avatar thing and came up with another way of creating a custom designed one.  I'll outline the steps below.  It took me a while to come up with this one, but it sure does work.

Steps:

1.  First make sure that you have a good image editor:  for example Adobe Photoshop CS4 (you can download a trial version of this from http://www.adobe.com/downloads/).  Then within iClone, make sure you set this as your texture editor within the preferences section.

2.  Within Iclone, add an avatar to your scene.

3.  Click on the skin tab and then within the modify section, select a material (lower, upper, etc.).  There should be a diffuse (texture).  Click the launch button.

4.  After clicking the launch button, your image editor will launch allowing you to edit the diffuse.  Edit the image (skin, color, overlay, texture).  This is where you can be very creative.  It can take some time, but it is well worth the effort.  Once you are through editing, save your image and go back into iClone (it should still be open waiting for you to do something).

5.  Within the modify section under the "Material & Texture Settings", locate the Update button and click it.  Now the modification that you made to your diffuse shall be applied to your Avatar.

6.  That's it.  You now have a unique Character to work with.

7.  One last thing I would do is save your customized Character by selecting your Avatar (double click on it), make sure the Avatar button is depressed under the Actor tab, and click the Add button in the Content Manager.

I'm sure there is documentation on this somewhere on the Reallusion website.  But, I added my take on it here.

Have fun creating your own custom characters

Steve
