| | Hi all, I rendered a movie to YouTube and the color was a lot darker than the original. I used Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0 to assemble the clips made in iClone. Many of your guys' movie has nice colors, what rendering settings did you use? Thanks -David. |

Thanks -David.hi, David...don't know if this will help, cause I'm still working on finding a better converter/compresser, myself...but I'll post my settings that I use for rendering my vids for now.... I usually choose 'uncompressed', and then I take them to Windows Movie Maker 2 and downsize them there....the vids at this link were rendered at 114 megs each, but were barely 2megs each, after running them thru WMM2.....but lmk if you were talking about the 'preference' settings instead. Liquid/Chrome, Liquifying Effects in iClone 3 Standard thought this was interesting and maybe useful

| Hi david. Just an observation. I noticed the same thing with some of my videos and then realised a lot can depend on the viewers screen resolution or the screen itself. A flat screen always seems to give a brighter and better picture in my opinion. Of course some (hundreds of thousands?), have yet to go this route but I have opted to cater for the flat screen viewer and not change my video lighting.

| | Hi Mary and Gizmo, Thank you for sharing your experience, and sorry about the late reply. I have not checked this topic lately. Yes, I was talking about the rendering settings (codec, bitrates, etc) in video editing app after the editing was done on the iClone avi clips. I posted the question after noticing my movie look a lot darker on YouTube (and thus lost quite some details) than it appear on Vegas Movie Studio (VMS), the video editing app that I use. I have since learned from the VMS forum that this was unavoidable since different players, encoders, decoders use different gamma. Based on the suggestions that I got, for the next project, I will try some color corrector, and also uploading short clips to YouTube with different lightings for testing before going full clips. If I find something that works, I will be happy to share it here. In the mean time, I am sharing the VMS rendering specs here just in case someone else also uses VMS, or maybe the specs can be applied to some other video editing app as well. I got this excellent set of specs from a very helpful expert on that forum. I am also new to VMS and has learned quite a lot there. Note: The following specs will produce the YouTube HD 1280 x 720 Project Video rendering quality: Best Video Video format: AVC Frame size: (Custom frame size) Width 1280 Height 720 Profile: Main Entropy coding: CAVLC Frame rate: 29.970 (NTSC) Field order: None (progressive scan) Pixel aspect: 1.0000 Bit rate (bps): 5,000,000 Audio Audio format: AAC Sample rate: 48,000 Bit rate (bps): 128,000 System Format: MP4 file format (.mp4) |

| Settings were a bit hard to read but high-lighting helped. These look very much like the settings I'm using in Vegas (for YouTube and Vimeo) and I have no problem with things being too dark. I render to a .BMP image sequence in iClone and then to MP4 in Vegas. Here is a link to my first HD movie that I put on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3zoN9NnKko. Color is pretty close to the original and certainly not too dark:

| | Thanks Zuijlen. Yep, the specs are hard to read. I was copying and pasting from my own note and forget to change the font color. Yours look fine. I think the problem with my movie was that it was all night scenes. I probably need to make it a little lighter inside iClone next time. Lots of experiments to go through. With iClone 4 coming with the high dynamic range, I better get a good handle on the colors. By the way, the facial expressions on your video are superb! |

| Thanks, David. CrazyTalk does a nice job for facial animation. I found that slight head and eye movements help. As to night scenes, you could experiment with bluish light a bit. There is probably also all kinds of tips to gather from the "real" film world to give the illusion of a dark scene.
