My oldest daughter and I decided to enter the The Hobbit contest which involves recreating a specific scene from the movie. We only had about 3 weeks to complete it. My daughter is working on the costume. She is playing Bilbo which means Bilbo is about to get in touch with his feminine side, lol.

I just got iClone 6 a couple days ago so I have not had time to learn how to use all of its cool new features yet. I did however discover displacement and I love it. I have included two pics below. One of Smaug the dragon exported from iClone 5 and then the second one from iClone 6. Way better in iClone 6 and I don't even know how to use it yet. I have not tried indigo. I do not have time to learn it or wait for it to render. Maybe next time.

I Make My Mates Do The CanCan For The Amusement Of Killer Robots

It started on Jan 13 and ends Feb 1. Not much time to recreate a scene. We finished Bilbo's costume last night. Today I have to find a wig somewhere and when my daughter gets out of school we will start shooting her green screen footage. I don't have much experience color grading a green screen shot to match the lighting in the scene so that should be fun.

I have most of the scenes created in iClone 5. I just got iClone 6 so I am not sure where everything is located and I do not have a lot of time for looking. I know the pillars, rocks and treasure look way better with iClone 6's displacement feature. I hope I have time to fiddle around with the lighting in iClone 6. I have a feeling it would also make the scenes look better. I tried a quick test render with a single frame in indigo. The scenes are so dark it took 30 minutes and did not look very good. So I am not going to have enough time to learn how and then render out a 2 minute video before Feb 1.

Regardless of anything else my daughter and I are having a blast working on it.

Have you try looking to see if there are any cosplayers in your area, if not buy a standard brown wig and take it to a very understanding hair stylist.

Unfortunately nobody sells wigs in my town. Not cheap throw away wigs for costumes. The only wigs being sold are $150 so I will not be getting one of those. My town is just too small for any kind of costume type stuff. There is not enough time to order one online so we decided to get a hairnet to hold my daughter's long hair up and we'll try poking some of it through the holes and styling it a little. Wish us luck. I think we're going to have a very girly Bilbo. Maybe it's his sister? lol.

Here's a shot of my daughter in Smaug's treasure room. She is hiding from the dragon.

We could not find a wig and the hair net did not work so we pulled her hair up over the top and hair sprayed it in place. It was very solid... lol. But she did a great job.

I just discovered a cool iClone 6 feature. I was animating the dragon talking when iClone 6 crashed. I had not saved for a while so I was mad. I just lost a lot of work. When I cooled off enough to start re-doing everything I launched the program and a new little screen popped up saying there was some unsaved data and wanted to know if I wanted to add it to my last project. Whoa... I of course said yes and when everything came up I discovered I had gotten angry for no reason. I had lost nothing. Everything I did was there... amazing. This has to be one of iClone 6's best new features. Totally cool.
