So I was talking with a filmmaker this morning and I mentioned to him that I was learning animation and he asked me if I would make a few seconds shots for him. I explained to him that I'm an amateur and that I wouldn't be able to come close to the Assassins Creed quality he was looking for but, after I showed him some iClone examples, he was insistent that I go ahead.
So, should I say yes and should I charge, if I do, how much?

Think more about doing your best quality more than the fee you charge. Let him pay you with the whatever budget is available to him. You need the experience, he needs the support. The quality work you do now, will ultimately determine how much you get paid later. Work fast with quality and be dependable, and you will always be worth top dollar. Become the "go to" person.

OK, 10 seconds has turned into 5 minutes for $1500.

Congratulations! Now that you're being paid, you'll want a faster computer... additional modeling software... more iClone content and props... maybe a second computer that you can dedicate to rendering... By the time you're done, you'll have lost $800. IMPORTANT QUESTION FOR YOU TO ASK: Will you be able to include any of this work in a portfolio? If not immediately, maybe after a set timeframe.
iClone 7... Character Creator... Substance Designer/Painter... Blender... Audacity... Desktop (homebuilt) - Windows 10, Ryzen 9 3900x CPU, GTX 1080 GPU (8GB), 32GB RAM, Asus X570 Pro motherboard, 2TB SSD, terabytes of disk space, dual monitors. Laptop - Windows 10, MSI GS63VR STEALTH-252, 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 (6GB), 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD

who knows, maybe one day, your highest paying gig might be your own video series on amazon.com!

@Lost, About credits and portfolios... I was refering to your ability to post short video clips and/or stills on your own web site or Facebook page. Then you can use that for marketing material... "See what I can do." It's great that you're being credited. Can you post it here when you're done? Especially when establishing yourself, the ability to showcase your early work is important. And, assuming they're happy, will they be willing to serve as a reference? (Maybe people don't do that anymore.) That can be worth a discount. Regardless, you're getting paid to do some iClone work, and I'm very happy for you. Make us proud!
