The Second Life viewer source has become open source, and several companies have developed their third party commercial viewers to Second Life. Here is some preliminary info on the source: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Open_Source_Portal You may have heard of CSI:NY and the "CSI Second Life browser" - that is one example of how a third party commercial entity developed their own plug to SL.
