I find it difficult to select a material I want based on the little spheres used to display the materials.
A lot of them look too much the same, and aren't very representative of what you get when you actually apply the material to your object.
This is especially true for things that are normally applied to large flat areas like wood planks and bricks.
It would be great to have some sort of improved "material browser" that includes a couple of 3D objects, like a tea pot, a cylinder, a cube, and a sphere.
You should be able to change the scaling of the texture (do you want to see two or fifty bricks applied to the cube). You'd also want to zoom in on the 3D object.
Currently it takes a LOT of trial-and-error to find the wood planks you want for a floor, wall, or door.
