i am in the process of building my new machine - one of the driving reasons is the machine bogs down on a scene with > 11 G2 costumed characters - thinking this may be due to the RAM limitations of 32 bit i.e. not being able to use anything beyond 3GB. Furthermore i plan on rendering most of my work going forward to HD - 720p - and this makes for huuge video files for editing

so planning to build a machine, Core i7 + 6GB RAM +win 7 64 (or Vista 64) - primary software load is iclone, CT, 3D Xchange, Audacity, Adobe CS4 (photoshop, premier, after effects) and Real Draw

i know most of the trade off (less driver support, game compatibility etc..) against going 64 bit, we know 64 bit vista works with iClone - but are there any more tangible benefits?

will it be able to take advantage of the additional RAM?
will it make iclone be more responsive?
How will it positively affect video editing large files?

let's all share our experience/insights so we can all benefit

Evening Gabe, go for it.

1. I've been running the majority of your listed programmes on a 64bit os system happily, most of the bad news/no compatibility rumours are just that by a minority.

2.  the driver issue isn't really an issue (so far for me anyway).

3. Also the most important thing is I can still play the games I played on 32bit

The extra ram is extra verrrrummm in the rendering (especially if you run parallel graphics cards) and probably helps with stability issues, DT

Likewise Mellorman. Upgraded my system last week (64bit / i7 / 12gb ).

The extra Ram/i7 processor are amazing ive just loaded the clonebar scene in and put in 27 characters some animated some idle, and there was no slow down at all when moving round with the camera. Well worth the upgrade. It crashed when i tried to add Zack as the 28th though

so far system seems much more stable than my previous one. so fingers crossed.

PS: since getting iclone 3.2, i havnt used any of my games so dont know about driver problems yet, although once ive finished Soulking i will be reloading COD4

Is there a clinic for Iclone addiction

hey Darren and peter thanks for the insights - sounds like a green light - i like the comment about 27 characters! that will certainly improve things a lot

now the other question - wait for Win 7 or go with Vista 64....

You can download the Release Candidate of Windows 7 64 right now and I believe it doesn't expire until sometime next year. Do a google search for it and please use the official microsoft links (they're giving it away to use during the beta) rather than a torrent since a lot of the early versions of the RC were leaked early on the torrents and are filled with viruses.

I'm on the 32 bit version now but I'll probably be switching to the 64 this week just to see how things work.

Best,

Jim Finch

The official relase of Windows 7 is sometime next year, so maybe Vista 64 for now.  I built what you're planning to build and I have no regrets.  I upgraded to 12 GB the other day, but in order to benefit from that I had to also upgrade from Home Basic to Home Premium.

As far as Windows 7 goes, if you want to experiment with that you can create a dual-boot system.  I'm planning to do that at some pint.

Hi, Just tuppence to add.

Mellomedia is right re: running twinned Graphics cards.

I use a single nVidia top end card. Gig of ram on board. And 4 gigs in the main house. Its a really really tough card to overload.
I must be into the thousand count of props in some scenes. I'm not kidding. It just seems to eat everything I give it. I dont use mass characters, so I havent pushed it that far yet.

The worst I get with nVidia on top end load is a short half second delay when I drag the view round on a scene with everything and the kitchen sink in it. And thats it. After which its as fast as if there was half a dozen bits. I cant imagine what two would be like. But at $620:00 per card in England  they're not a light purchase.
It might have been an idea simply to install a pair like this and see how it runs. Each of these cards is a Gig of extra graphics ram and when you watch the file open in iCLone, oneof mine anyway, I see the main system churning through the Ram and the level goes down and down and down and suddenly coughs out a Gigs worth into the card.
I would swear by them. Wish I had found these a year ago.

I have prepared for it by leaving unallocated space on my system hard drive (about 100GB, which is plenty).  I haven't really tried it yet, too busy with other things.

I think with the unallocated partition available, it's pretty straightforward; apparently you just tell Windows 7 to use that.  It's been some time since I looked into it and I don't remember all the details. But I believe the newer OS will see the older one and the appropriate boot menu will be created.

As far as the iClone install is concerned that's a good question and I didn't think of that.  My guess is it will take an additional license if a separate install is needed.  Which makes sense as there is a different registry, path to DLLs, etc.  You can always try to run the Vista installation and see what happens...

One of my questions is does iClone take advantage of Duo Core Quad processors?

Next would be when can we expect a 64bit version of iClone?
