Hi rampart,

Just wondering if your opinion on ssd drives has changed since last year. Have you tried iclone 6 with ssd? Newbie who's putting together a new build for iclone 6 and was recommended ssd for the os. Would be grateful for your thoughts at this stage. I think all of the discussions here are a great help to someone new. Thanks to all.

I haven't got an SSD. However, Many have been caught-out with SSDs with insufficient Capacity.

The only advantage a SSD has over a Mechanical Drive is that it Loads Programs faster, with minimal effect on Render speed, which is GPU specific.

iClone Runs better with iC Content on OS Drive. So -  SSD 250GB Minimum, at a guess. Preferably 500GB.

You'll get more Replies if you also Post in iClone 6 General Forum, rather than iClone 5 Wink

Anyone-else?

Thanks colour,
Your reply was very helpful - good to know that iClone Runs better with iC Content on the OS Drive. I think an SSD with sufficient storage would be cost prohibitive and the money better spent on upping the GPU ram.

Colour is correct, an SSD will not improve your rendering speeds.  It will also *not* help will large projects or an improved interactive preview speed.

And the warning about getting one that's too small is very wise.

But with that said, on a "good" system, upgrading from a spinning HDD to an SSD is an upgrade you'll actually notice.  It boots faster.  Applications launch faster.  Noticeably faster.  You don't need a stopwatch to measure the difference; you'll actually feel the difference.  If you play games, levels load much faster.

I highly recommend them.  I have a 250GB model, with other hard drives for mass storage.  I install all software, including iClone and all my iClone "content" on the SSD.  (Projects, renders, and "My Documents" are on an HDD.)  Only moderate attention is needed to keep it 75% full.  I would struggle with a smaller drive based on my usage.

If you shop, most any current model is vastly superior compared to an old HDD, so don't get overly concerned about one being 0.5% better than another.

iClone 6 relies more on temporary files it seems, in part for the recovery of a project after a crash. In iClone 5 those temporary files could be on another drive, but I have found that this is problematic in iClone 6, so your temporary directory is best kept in the default location on the C: drive.

Because prices have gone down, I would recommend a 500 GB SSD drive.

I have my content on a separate hard drive and have had no issues with that over the years. But if you decide to use the OS (C) drive then you should definitely go for a 500 GB drive. Sufficient free space on a drive is important.

I have a 500 GB SSD (OS) and ran out of space really fast ,so I have my content on another 1TB internal Hard-drive which defeats the purpose.

We're approaching $0.25/GB.

960GB Crucial SSD for $290 (USD).  ($0.30/GB)

Eventually I'll replace my 250GB SSD with a "1TB" SSD, but for me it's not urgent at all.

I got sick of backing things up everywhere, although I still do, so I bought one of these:

http://oyendigital.com/hard-drives/store/3R5-EB3-M.html

And I filled it full (5 drives) of these 4TB Enterprise hard drives for a total of 20TB. It's only money. BigGrin

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/985498-REG/hgst_0s03601_4tb_ultrastar_internal_hd.html

I bought the hard drives cheaper than the ones above as they are in retail boxes. I am running the box in JBOD mode (Just A Bunch Of Drives) as opposed to RAID for simplicity. I can do my own redundancy between the drives and mirror important data myself with SyncBack Pro. I was going to build a NAS box but unless you want to spend a lot of time learning NAS and RAID etc, and also the possibility of one wrong move and "lose it all", besides lost drive space (with RAID), I think I am good for a while. p.s. I forgot to add, I have a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro for my "C" drive and my old Samsung 256GB Pro is now my "E" drive and a couple of 1TB WD Black drives for storage in the pc. Wink
