| | another st00pid n00b question i'm afraid i've set up my scene and got everything working. so i decided to add some rain effects for atmosphere. added those ok, but... ...it takes a few frames for the emitter to "power up", so the start sequence (which i've already orchestrated) is in the dry for a few seconds, and then the rain appears not terrible, but i'd like to add a few dummy frames at the start of the clip which i'll then be able to edit out later. i can foresee possibly needing to insert stuff at the start of a project in the future anyway - but i can't find any "insert" mechanism anyone know how i could do that?

| You could use a program such as Particle Illusion and ADD the rain particle after the project is produced...as an after thought. Some editors such as Corel Video Studio also have the rain and weather effects that can be applied to your exported project video.
Now the easy thing to do might be to just not use the beginning of your current project and create a separate one with just the opening and then stitch it together with your current one in a post edit.
Not knowing what the project contains doesn't allow telling you too much. But you can always SAVE your current PROJECT as a NEW Project and make the changes there, that way if you mess it up, you can go back to the original and start again without messing up the source.
Now the hard part:
Extend the time line by enough frames to compensate for the additional frames you want to insert.
Select EVERYTHING (ONE Item at a Time) in your project in the scene manager...that includes all tabs on each item on the time line, and move them to the right the amount of frames you want to insert. Some items will have no markers except at the beginning of the time line, while others may have many (i.e.) Cameras, Characters, etc.) You have to move every item the same amount....it can easily throw off everything, so you have to be persistent in selecting everything on the time line from start to finish...tedious to say the least. Drag across the time line, and highlight it all, CUT and PASTE down the Time Line the number of frames you want to insert. Some items will only have a single marker, like furniture placed in a scene and it never moves...so that only has to be CUT/Pasted down the timeline the same number of frames.
Another Option is to save each item as it is, which would include all cameras, lights, characters, props, animations, Motion Edits, etc...and then start a new Project and insert them in a New Project....somewhere down the time line beyond the beginning....then add your particle rain. Better off starting a new project if you decide on this!
Note: Sit down and think about it for a few minutes before you decide the route you take; it can take only seconds to lose it all...don't rush in fixing it. Adding frames at the end of a project is easy, adding at the start is a headache. Next Project, you may want to consider sliding your left scene marker limiter (blue triangle) under the preview play line to the right, then start your project from there. That way you have flex space.
GOOD Luck! ...and Merry Christmas.

| | thanks for the lengthy reply i've solved the immediate problem by doing a fade from black when editing the output AVI in my video editor - that way the rain doesn't seem to just suddenly appear from nowhere as to the generic problem, all of the proposed solutions seem messy and cumbersome (not your fault, the fault of the software). i was hoping that someone would say something like "oh yeah, it's not well known, but if you go to the start of the timeline and press the INSERT key, it will insert some blank frames for you", or something similar even the simple solution of leaving some blank frames every time you set up a new project doesn't really work either. it's certain that if you leave say, 10 blank frames, you'll discover you really need 11. so next time you leave 11, and find you really need 12... and so on and so forth anyway, thanks again for taking the time to reply

| Agreed that a option to insert frames in the beginning would be helpful, but it just isn't there. I would imagine with all the time line options affected it would take some coding to add this.
Reallusion Staff will read these threads, and if you put it also in the WISH LIST thread, they may see it sooner. That's how the program got to where it is today...people make suggestions. Some are just not adaptable whereas some are implemented immediately in the next update.
Good Point regardless.

| yeah, i saw the suggestions thread, but i don't really want to start adding suggestions until i'm more comfortable that i know exactly what the app can (and what it can't) do
