I know I've been absent from here lately, but ended up working a shut down at a power plant here in North Carolina.
In case you 're like I was beforer I started shut downs, and didn't know what a shut down was, it basically is when an industrial plant ( power, water, sewage, etc ) closes, or shuts down part of it's workings, so their equipment in that area can be inspected, repaired, rebuilt or replaced.

While standing atop one of the huge 9 story boilers at this one plant on my morning break, I looked at the entire plant and the surrounding land.
And boy was I inspired!! "This will be a great location for a video game!!" I thought to myself. or even better, a movie. horror, drama, action adventure..the massive steel structures and scaffolding that surrounds these boilers will make for great locals to film in.
The huge machinery , and separate locations in the plant yard will also make for great story lines and such.

I started building it soon as I got back to my hotel this evening, and will post pics of my progress.

So far these are the parts to the set I'll be constructing ( hahaha constructing a construction site )
!: lay down yard
2:switch yard
3:railway yard (where the trains bring in loads of coal. I watched them unload the cars one day. the building they pull it in actually rotates upside down, dumping the coal from the open top car )
4: various scaffolding set ups, odd and end construction materials, etc.
5: interior sets such as main control room, locker rooms, boiler rooms, bottom ash, coal handling etc.

the complete set up will be so large I may end up releasing it as different packs and maybe, file size allowing an entire project.

plus it's based off what I've actually gotten to see in person from the real power plants I've been working at. That'll add that extra touch of reality to the sets.

I'm also working on an 18 wheeler. I've worked on those and driven them for over 10 years so I want to make em as true to life as possible.

I'll have pics soon

Why don't you make the greatest horror movie of all time? About a few absolutely rabid greedheads who are so crazy and powerful they can remove entire mountain ranges, poison the air and water, kill their own workers in needless mine disasters, and release enough greenhouse gases into the atmosphere to raise sea-levels, trigger unprecedented weather extremes, and ultimately, cook life as we know it down to the level of bacteria?

Sounds pretty scary to me!

bg38, it will be interesting to see your progress. I think you came back just in time to benefit from the new 3dXchange 5 and the 64-bit version of iClone!

Just wanted to drop in and post some images of some of the machinery that will be available. This is based loosely on some of the industrial machines I see here at the plant.

I'll further refine them in blender, so this is a first draft of it so far.

the gray wheels, once finished will be pulleys with a belt

and most of the machinery can be used alone or pieced together with other parts to create your own ideas

I'm also replacing the sketchup textures with my own. these are more or less used while I build the models

I'll try to post more updates as work allows

Okay, back yet again, with an update to my industrial pack.

Here's a clip from a test scene I shot using part of my abandoned factory setting. This is a drain pipe running into the local river. plenty off story line possibilities here.

Maybe it once leaked chemicals into the water.. or it can be an access into the interior of the factory itself so the protagonists can solve a mystery, or get into trouble with the film's monsters / villains, etc.

you may have to copy / paste the link into your browser. when I used the [url=] tags it just kept sending me back to this post when i clicked it.

Here's an almost completed building i'm making for use in a horror film I wrote for iclone.
This, among other buildings and props will be available in my pack, hopefully soon to be released.

EDIT: Here's a hospital type building in the works as well. I'm replacing the sketchup textures with my own.

Looking good BG. I always enjoy it when folks add custom details to their stories like this. Makes everything a bit more personal. That personal touch is one of the good/fun aspects of machinima/personal animation projects. Keep at it and keep us informed!

Thank you for your comments and encouragement
I wanted to get some roads ready in case the characters needed to get to the store or something. I figured it would be easier for them to travel around

I made the asphalt textures shown here myself in GIMP, trying to simulate the worn, cracked texture of an old back road.
I'll have several different segments with the pack, the single lane, double yellow line, single line with dashes, blank asphalt, and the one white line as well as two white lines.
I'm making some overlays for them so you can add tire marks, repairs to the cracks, stains etc.

The road pictured here was made from 2 segments put together, so you can build the road as long as you want.

edit: pic of a desert road scene I was testing out..
