Make Conversations in iClone

Category: iClone_Hints & Tips_Facial Animation

Version: iClone 1.52

Date: 2007.02.21

Q: Does anyone know if you can control speaking in a timeline? Is it in another timeline? What am i doing wrong?

As far as getting two or more characters to interact with speech that is back and forth between the two. You must time your lines and record them in CrazyTalk to "line them up." For example if character 1 says "Hello, how are you?" and it takes 2 seconds. Then character 2 replies, "Very well. How about you?" and it takes 3 seconds. You have a total of 5 seconds of dialogue. You would need to set up two different .wav files or scripts to have the two appear to speak to each other. Script 1 would need the first line and then three seconds of silence. Script 2 would need two seconds of silence then "Very well. How about you?" after that. Save them separately and then apply them to your avatar inside of iClone. In order, second line gets applied last. Make sure you switch your character before you apply the facial animation. Also, if you add some eye movement to the model in CrazyTalk it will carry over to the animation in iClone and give you characters more life. I hope this answers your question. In the future versions of iClone there will be timeline editors for this sort of thing, where tracks can be stacked.

Teeth Animation between iClone & CrazyTalk

Category: iClone_Hints & Tips_Facial Animation

Version: iClone 2.0

Date: 2007.05.08

Q: There is a problem with teeth in 1.5 and 2.0 In my latest vid on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uifVuKBBVB8 it is apparent. In the opening scenes where the character is looking up and straight ahead with mouth open the teeth slide majestically into view. Is there a way of fixing the teeth?

1.  Teeth position

In CT, the teeth position follows both the "Face" and "Lips" keys.
In iClone, the teeth position follows only the "Lips" keys.
For example, both "Surprise_4"(a face key) and "Oh"(a lips key) open the teeth in CT and the result is accumulated.
But in iClone, only "Oh" open the teeth.
-----------------------------------------------------
Face key "Surprise_4" only

2. CT result

iClone results, notice that the teeth are still closed)

-----------------------------------------------------
Lips key "Oh" only

CT result

iClone result. The teeth are opened in both AP.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Face key "Surprise_4" plus Lips key "Oh"

CT result

iClone result. The teeth are opened halfway, since only the lips key takes effect on teeth.

3.Decay of the "Lips" key

Only the Lips key will decay in iClone and sustain in CT like Charles mentions in the last mail.

However the Face key can sustain in both program.

To keep the mouth open in iClone, only one Face key is needed. But if user want to do it with lips keys, setting 2 keys will do.

The mouth shape will be kept during the interval between the 2 lips keys.

These inconsistencies will be handled in iClone 3.0 with motion layer capability.
