The 2nd link represents the research database of the "French National Institute for Research in Computer Science" (no fear: it's in English !) and contains more than 90.000 objects in different formats (but mostly 3DS or OBJ).

If you scroll down the disclaimer you find dozens of links to other 3D sites on the left but if you accept the terms of usage you will be linked to the website collection.
[Once inside you can also directly set a bookmark if you're interested in the content.]
You can either search by keyword or by clicking onto one of 63 category symbols and then choose (and freely rotate by vrml plugin) and download single files or even the whole category.

Could be worth a visit...

the Google Sketch up 3d Warehouse is a good one -

I have uploaded a fair few very accuarte and low poly weapons on there - but the textures are some time a bit off

@Alley: Thank you for your recommendation - I checked the Reallusíon scene packages but I am afraid there is nothing that solves my problem. I am looking for some basic landscapes like deserts etc.@ipiazzo: I will check the download link you gave me. I tried a free version of "Bryce" today, which would work, but I can export only objects not the whole 3D-scene.

Collada Export.Loads of 3D links here. I guess the obvious answer are the World Wilderness Scenes for sale by Reallusion.:w00t: They are not really that expensive but there is a cost. Also, if you go through backdated Newsletters of Reallusion, they offered some free for download. Also, if you are a Cool Clones member, they would have some 3D scenes available for download.
