These are higher resolution than their G1 cousins from iClone 1.0 and give much improved quality when rendered.
There are 9 pre-defined body shapes that make up the G2 family. In the base product you get 2 of these. These are the average proportioned adult characters Jane and Jack. Both these characters come with one CloneCloth outfit which can be customized into many, many different outfits.
The CloneCloth For Essential Human pack is the full clothing system for Jane and Jack which enables an almost endless variety of clothes to be created for them by simply editing the textures in an image editor. The full pack contains different clothing styles such as dresses, gowns, bodysuits etc. It also comes with a large collection of pre-made clothes.
The Natural Human Base Pack contains the whole 9 G2 characters but without clothing or CloneCloth. There is also another pack called the Working Fashion Pack which features 6 of the G2 figures in office type clothing. This clothing can be altered in colour and texture but not in shape. It also comes with animations, accessories, hairstyles etc.
There is certainly enough content that ships with iClone to enable you to make many different characters and outfits and get you started. There is also a number of G1 avatars included for variety as well as the new G2 figures. 3DS Max is not required to use iClone at all but can be useful for developers wishing to make completely new body shapes.
I hope this answers your questions. If you have more don't hesitate to ask. :)
Pete

Included and Add-on figures...

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but I am just now discovering iClone. I noticed that there are avatar packages, specifically CloneClloth for Essential Human @ $129.95 and the 9 G2 Natural Human Base @ $99.95. Reading the iClone Studio product description there are references to included G2 figures as well as CloneCloth. What I want to know is what really comes with Studio/do I need these figures?

I am very intriqued by iClone, but 3DS Max is not one of the programs I use. I need to know that I can use iClone studio without investing in hundreds of dollars worth of content to do so.
