It was one of the first movies I watched on TMU and the story and acting were unbelievable, I was glued to my chair and I felt Grace's turmoil. And there were so many iClone movies nominated....I was encouraged to see just many iCloners have taken the time to get involved with the TMU community, as that is my "home base" and the more cross-pollination of my friends from here & there that takes place, the happier I am :)

Here's the full list of winners:

The First Annual Ollie Award Winners: 2009

OLLIE AWARD BADGE DESIGN WINNER: Stvndysn

BEST PICTURE Saving Grace
BEST DIRECTOR Sisch
BEST ACTOR Goofparade
BEST ACTRESS Sisch
BEST TMU NEWCOMER Act3Scene24
BEST WRITER Sisch
BEST DRAMA Kate Lee's The Afflicted by Sisch
BEST COMEDY The Clarks by act3scene24
BEST WESTERN The Phantom of The West by BenTuttle90
BEST ROMANCE Temporary Night by Nukester
BEST SCI-FI Saving Grace by Sisch
BEST ACTION Valentine’s Day by Michael B6
BEST ARTHOUSE Clockwork by Iceaxe
BEST FANTASY Kayna – Rik Vargard
BEST HORROR Shadows over Innsmouth by JosephKW
BEST MUSICAL Temporary Night by Nukester
BEST WAR Memoirs of Meuse River by Pookashells
BEST MYSTERY Transience by JosephKW
BEST TRAILER November: Trailer by Pookashells
BEST SOUNDTRACK Temporary Night by Nukester
BEST COMPOSER Nukester
BEST SOUND EDITING Temporary Night by Nukester
BEST SOUND DESIGN Temporary Night by Nukester
BEST SET USE IN A MACHINIMA MOVIE Cleopatra IV by TheMGMKid
BEST COSTUME OR MAKEUP IN A MACHINIMA MOVIE Cleopatra IV by TheMGMKid
BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS Shadows over Innsmouth by JosephKW
BEST PROP FOR A MACHINIMA MOVIE Tarison’s Bluescreen Sets by Tarison
BEST SHORT FORM FILM (<10 MINS) Clockwork by IceAxe
BEST LONG FORM FILM (>10 MINS) Saving Grace by Sisch
Best The Movies Film The Shadow over Innsmouth by JosephKW
Best Moviestorm Film Saving Grace by Sisch
Best iClone Film Coming Home by Lizard
Best Other Machinima Movie Little Pablo by act3scene24
Best "Mash-up" or Anymation Movie Saving Grace by Sisch
Best Screenplay Saving Grace (Sisch)
Best Subtitled Film Unfaithful by Meowan
Best Non-English Movie Award Next Door by Neonoir
Best Live Action Movie Dial for your Life by JosephKW
Best PR Campaign The Grey People by Moonlight Pictures
Best Movie Poster Shadows over Innsmouth poster by Burkey1993
Most Helpful Community Member Dulci
Most Entertaining Guest Norrie
The Thong De Roger Award for Outstanding Contribution to TMU Ken

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting

thanks Killian - actually i'll be the first to say the awards was a brilliant idea, the execution was loads of fun

as with any other awards show - oscars, Emmy's, dance shows, and yes olympic gymnastics :)
you can easily identify the truly bad ones - the others all fit into a bell curve and some element of subjectivity will always be present - this is inherent into this type of process - unlike a sporting event such as football where the winner is judged by how many goals are scored (ok one can argue about the bad referee call)

as such i don't think there are necessarily winners and losers, but honor is extended to everyone nominated

For new people in the community, being recommended for nomination is quite an accomplishment - that is saying no one knows you but your work got the attention
being a veteran to the community means people already know you and your body of work so winning an award is icing on the cake

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting

Well thank you all for adding to the debate.
Killian's post is like a defence against the awards show and the running of it. I never criticised the show, idea or how it was run, personally I thought it was done perfectly.

To be fair Killian, if it hadn't been for Dulci some who follow this forum, like me, would never have know about the awards. I didn't even know I had been nominated until I heard on the "Wolf and Dulci" show.

My concerns were that of the TMU community and how they seemed to magnetise towards certain individuals. Also TMU was the next logical step after TMO was shut down, so inevitably there was going to be a large "The Movies" contingent of members. Let's hope, as you do, that in 12 months time the share has spread out to other platforms.

Cape!

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting

Being one of the organisers of said awards, I feel it falls to me to explain how it worked.

The idea of an award show for the TMU community came about a while ago, but no one was willing to put the effort in to make it work.

The initial categories were opened to all members of the TMU community to vote on whatever movie they wanted (within a few simple restrictions).

All the nominations from that round of voting were then tallied, and the three most nominated movies, directors, etc, were then put into the second round vote, and the community members voted on them again.

The one which came out with the most votes in each category was the winner.

So, ultimately, the public voted for who they wanted to win, which is what the purpose of the thing was; if the public voted a particular way, who were we as organisers to say that they were wrong? Popularity contest? Possibly. But, let's be honest, no-one (least of all me) has the time to lay down stringent criteria that MUST be adhered to or the nomination will be disallowed. Sorry; don't have the time or the inclination to go into something that's designed to be fun in that much depth (plus whatever criteria are placed will penalise certain nominees over others; is that fair?) In every contest, there will always be "winners" and "losers" (even though everyone who got nominated deserved recognition) and whoever wins, someone won't be happy about it; that's life.

The awards were (and are) designed as a bit of entertainment for the hard working members of the community to show a bit of their appreciation for the film makers, directors, actors, writers, modders, etc, who have shown their work on TMU in the last twelve months; they're not designed as an "industry indicator" or anything silly like that; they're a bunch of awards dreamed up by community members, nominated by community members, voted on by community members and awarded TO community members.

The first one was always going to be saddled a little with the baggage (so to speak) that was carried from the vast majority of the initial community members being "veterans" of the old Movies game.

In the last few months, the community has seen a huge leap forward with talented film makers from iClone, Moviestorm and other platforms coming more to the fore. And a lot of the old movies community folk have since branched out into these other platforms (iClone and others); we've seen old faces from long ago return to show the work they've done in their chosen field, and we've seen bright new faces with talent appear.

I for one am excited by what potential is out there for when we do this next year. And yes, I DO hope that iClone, Moviestorm and other engines get a better showing next year but, bear in mind, people voted for what they liked over the whole 12 months; PR and exposure (where the potential voters can see the work they could be voting on next year) was an important factor; as were the quality of the films, the complexity of the technical aspects and the performances of the actors and actresses.

Some of the best iClone movies never made an appearance on the TMU site for a variety of reasons, so were never in contention (by the wording of the rules) and, sadly, some of those that DID maybe didn't get the recognition they deserved.

The appearance of iClone 4 and (possibly?) iClone 4.1-?? in the next year will, I believe, lead to a hyperjump in filming ability and quality... and there's no bad in that, one way or another!

Ultimately, as my boss always says: "moan about stuff, by all means, but don't moan and do bugger all about it!"; personally, I think every single person who won deserved to win. I also think that everyone who got NOMINATED deserved to win, but there could only be one "winner" in each category in the end.

The advances in anymation film making in just the last 12 months show some of the ability that these programs in the hands of talented people are capable of producing and, at the end of the day, isn't THAT what's the most important thing?

In any event, as a first try, we think it did pretty well (most folk seemed to enjoy it for what it was, anyway); we are already drawing up plans on how to do the whole shebang again next year (at which point I EXPECT to see a whole slew of quality iC movies getting noticed!) and avoid the pitfalls we encountered this time round, without making it into an overtly "popularity contest", by use of some mythical "elite panel of judges" or (god forbid!) the opinions of one person alone.

We'll get there, I'm sure.

Thanks for listening.

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting
biggstrek (10/12/2009)
Probably boils down the the initial nominations (round 1). But I'm in no position to complain as I did not send in any nominations (I was in hiatus at the time).
actually there was ample iclone representation in the final voting rounds - so it is not in the nominating process

iclone turned out to be the ignored beauty queen
while i don't argue the most of the winners deserved thier win, there were some where i wondered what criteria was used

as an example (not saying the winner did not deserve it but more a comment on the process) - for soundtrack- what was the criteria - did the vote hinge on whether sound track captured the emotion of the film, did the soundtrack convey the intent of the film, was it an original score, was it a stock score? etc.. etc.. - but then again since most awards like these are subjective, it can turn into a popularity contest

growing pains i suppose

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting

Probably boils down the the initial nominations (round 1). But I'm in no position to complain as I did not send in any nominations (I was in hiatus at the time).

I will say it did become a bit farcical towards the end as the same three people picked up award after award. But when the same movies were in many of the categories, that's to be expected.

Having said that, I feel they deserved their wins. They just need to have more nominations in the first round to help "spread the love".

Maybe next year we (including me!) can get more people to nominate movies initially.

And remember... with any public voting system, it is quite often a popularity contest (sorry, but it's true).
RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting

Can I just say that I listened live last night and enjoyed the "The First Annual Ollie Award".
However not to sound to harsh, I got the feeling that the voting was a little "The Movies" based and dare I say it, popularity played a role?

Again I'm not taking anything away from what people deserve, but in some cases an individual won multiple awards? Is that fair? Should there not have been more of a share around?

Also the biggest pill to swallow is that "iClone" didn't even do that well, only Lizard in the "Best iClone Movie" section won the only award.

Some may think it's sour grapes, but what do you think?

Cape!

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting
Tune in next sunday (11th October 2009) for The First Annual Ollies Ceremony which will be live on TMOA Radio during the Ken and Roger Show (2pm-7pm EST; 7pm-12am UK)

RE: TMUnderground's Ollies Voting

Congratulations to all those recognizable iClone user names I see on that award list!
