What are .x files?

Developer info can be found here.

Generally Character imports must go through a conversion process in 3ds max and exported as .vns files via the iclone max plug-in.

Practically, if you are talking about characters which have all the functionality of Iclone characters - your imports must be built, rigged, and skined in a specific way to work properly.
Starting from an export of your character as a low poly mesh with textures, which you import into max and re-rig is probably the best option.

Hi,

To import fully animated custom characters currently requires 3DS Max and the iClone plugin.

To import props, accessories, 3D scenes you will need 3DXchange. This enables you to open OBJ, 3DS or Google Warehouse SKP files and bring them into iClone.

To make use of any .X models will require that they be converted first to one of the accepted formats and then brought into iClone using one of the methods above.

There are numerous 3D modellers out there that will allow conversion of models including Blender which is free. I'm not sure if that converts .X models though.

It is also worth remembering that custom characters can be created within iClone without the need for any 3rd party products. Just a little creativity required.
