There is one thing I'm having hard time to argue with, and I'm trying hard to find the right arguments (until I'll be able to show something), is this kind of mind barrier, this surprisingly naive but embarrassing question we have to answer first, that I had to answer to most professionals including producers, media, financial support, etc..:
"Why bother creating realistic 3d movies or tv series when you can just shoot on set with actors ?"
Because we can ? Well, that's not enough, that does not "sell".
It's a classic dilemma.
But it proves that you have taken a hard look at the animation business beyond the thrill of using a software / tool to create a clip to demonstrate "what you could do with the software features.
Congratulation for advancing into the "maturing process" of this business.
I wanted to point out this risk and the issues you just mentioned, when you started talking about the Linear Workflow. Glad I held back and I am also glad that you raised these points on your own.
I understood these issues long back and consciously decided to develop
series with Toon Shaders and style of Seventies but with the Modern Tools. This will always keep me in check and overcome the dilemma you are in now or I was before.
Yesterday, I was talking about Planet "taunting" people to show their work. The classic dilemma that you talked is the reason why I do not fall for these kind of taunts.
I don't work on CLIPS. I work on many episodes before showing them to anybody. I am very comfortable with my basic animation capabilty to tell stories. I just want them to be a little more cinematic with rich content. I want people to take a holistic judgement on my work rather than doing some kind of technical evaluation. I am not trying to prove myself as a "technocrat". I want to prove that we could produce good series with tools like DAZ or ICLONE. But the end result may not have the imprint of DAZ or ICLONE. I will avoid the usual / standard characters and motions from these softwares.
My focus is to create a pipeline that will help me produce quick animated series at a very reasonable cost. But I would use RICH scripts, music, professional voice talents to deliver my productions. I have atleast one music / dance sequence in every episode. I want to differentiate my product in some manner.
At this moment, I am focussing on few episodes of 45 minutes each for children. The first one is about the issues and dilemma the young school children face on day to day basis. The second one is about one school girl with interest in martial art, her elder sister and a poetic Robot. There is also a Spy series for the young adults. A new adventure series is at the scripting stage. It's about a warrior mouse who sets out to search his old teacher. It could be enhanced with the concept of Time Travel.
All in toon shaders combined with realistic particle effects in AE and HitFilm.
Hope my selection of subjects is strategic enough to get the advertisers' attention.
