I am wondering if anyone is using 3D Coat for making models? I looked at the Substance Designer and Substance Painter but then they say I need to make the model before I even begin to use them.
I was thinking about just getting the Educational 3D Coat that is available to senior citizens for a lot less than the pro model.
Thanks,

Hi Ken

There are quite a few that use 3dCoat.

Myself vidi planetstardragon bluemidget to name a few that spring to mind.

It is a good programme for sculpting/modelling and is easier to use than zbrush I feel.

The downside for you would be that it is only a modelling programme yes you should be able to

take it into substance but to use it as an Avatar within ic5 and 6 when launched it would need to be rigged to a skeleton.

So you might be better looking at MayaLT. I think this is approx. $800 but at least you could rig etc and I believe substance also supports it as well as max.

The reason for saying the LT version of Maya is because it is considerably cheaper than the full version which is 1000's of $ as is 3ds Max.

Another option would be to use 3dCoat and then rig your model inside Daz3d which vidi does very well or pay Mixamo to rig it for you on their site.

Edit - Just thought you could also try Blender for rigging a Character as Blender is free. Also would be useful for creating props buildings etc only downside with Blender I find the UI a nightmare. But Free is a nice word perhaps try it and then decide.

Hope this information helps in some way.

If I had $800 I would look at ZBrush. I have blender but as you say, it is a nightmare to learn. someday I will learn it.
Right now I will look at 3D coat for $99 and maybe the then try to go through Daz which I also have now. I probably have more programs now than I need. I am always looking for the free stuff. Now Ihave a list but have not checked them all out.
thanks

I am wondering if anyone is using 3D Coat for making models?

3D coat, I love it ! It is my Swiss Army knife and main developer tool BigGrin

Substance Painter is only for Painting on a 3D model. (Texturing)

3D coat can many things more. sculpting, Retopo, uv mapping, morphing and texturing 3D painting

3D Coat is very good for sculpting organic stuff but for Hard Surfaces is a Moddleling Programm better , like hexagon .

3D coat is sculpting like sculptris or zbrush. It have a nice UV mapper and a great retopo Tool . The 3D Painter is similar like Substance Painter, but has a lot more Tools like Photoshop .

Also very soon it will have a PBR viewport and materials like in Substance Painter .

example

But beware , do not start without the necessary 3D Knowledge , because you will lost in this bunch of Options and possibilities
3D coat is a great Tool if you know what you do .
But that applies to all 3d Aplication, as well

BTW
I had subscribe Maya LT and cancel it again, because Maya LT cost every Month Money and is not better as my tools in my pipeline Hexagon 19 $, DAZ studio and 3D coat.

I use 3Dcoat (Steam version) mainly to modify shape , auto-uv,auto-retopo and texturing. Because I use photoshop since the first version , 3Dcoat is the easiest tool I founded to all what I need because it is a photoshop-like way.
If you want to see a Hard surface modeling with 3Dcoat , you can take a look at this :

Last year I bought 3d Coat around Christmas time when they had a sale and Pilgway stated something to the effect that it would be the only sale for a year.

So perhaps another sale is nearly due?

$99 is good value for such a program.

I use Iclone, 3dXchange, Carrara, Daz Studio, Poser, Hexagon, Bryce and Sculptris. I just go from one to the other as the notion takes me and am gradually getting to grips with most of them. Still with very much left to learn.

3d Coat is the one program I've hardly touched yet. I need to give it intense attention for 2-3 weeks sometime!

But I think it is an excellent program. It seems to be well-respected by professionals but it is at a price for amateurs like me also.

I am gathering the avatars and models I will need to do a movie on the Book of Daniel in the Bible.
I have the lions and some caves and some avatars. I am looking at the buildings, some of the clothing, and things like that. There may be others like how to make a hand write on a wall, etc.
I just want a program to supplement what I have now to do the things I will or may need.
I know there will be a learning curve and the more I look at the expensive ones and even the Substance Designer which still needs another program to make the model, I notice that 3dCoat seems to do almost everything that is left after GIMP leaves off.
That s why I was asking the question. It looks like I can add 3d Coat to my programs and I will have everything I will need.
Thanks for all the advice. i was concerned because 3D coat didn't mention if it could be saved in .obj for 3DXchange. It can as I found out in their forum.
I also found many on here using it so it must be a good one to use. and not too expensive.
Thanks for all the assistance.
