Newbie here. Working in iClone 5, 32 & 64-bit versions.

I've been working with training videos & have lots to learn but have stumbled when using snap-to-grid. I can get blocks to snap in "x" & "y" directions but not "z". Also, when adding another object I can not get it to snap in any direction. Tried ctrl + w hot key. Also checked preferences & snapping is checked ON. I've also tried both 32 & 64-bit versions of iClone 5 but have the same issue. Weird, must be missing something??? w00t

Since the Grid is only on X and Y there is no way to have something snap to Z. You can turn "Snap to Model" on and stack items on top of each other.

I just tried Snap to Grid adding several items on after another, and everything worked as expected.

Thanks. My version of iClone is 5.51.3507.1

Forum member Colour linked this training video (https://forum.reallusion.com/Topic31003-33-1.aspx) . I'm working with the 1st video. In & about the 16 minute mark of the video the instructor (Stuckon3D) demonstrates snap-to-grid function working in "z". This is what I was referring to. He may have been working with a different version of iClone that had that functionality. I can snap in x & y, not z.

Snap to model doesn't seem to function properly either. I was expecting the cube to move 100 in z because the grid is set to 100. But, instead, the cube moves 13.2 in x, 13.2 y & .2 in z increments. Not sure what is going on??? w00t

I just took a look at the tutorial and using just the box and ball props could get them to snap in x,y and z only when both Snap to Grid and Snap to Model are active. With only Snap to Grid active the ball would not snap to the top of the box when moved up.

I know that Cris did his tutorials in iClone 4, but the same functions are available in ver. 5.

I've done lots of video editing in my past & know how various hardware combos can effect software performance. This might be the case now.

If I have both Snap to Grid and Snap to Model checked it still will not snap in z. When cloning & moving in z, the cloned cube will snap but at 99.6 instead of 100. Unless there's a preference setting elsewhere, I don't have a clue. ??? w00t

I tried re-installing iClone 5 but it made no difference. I have learned that Ctrl+ up arrow does the same as snap-to but in increments.

The snap to object seems to override the snap to grid if you are hitting another object. It's a collision detection type of thing. If you are not hitting another object, the snap to grid snaps the pivot point of your object (or avatar) to the grid intersections in the X and Y. Naturally, a finer grid means more intersections.

1) Grid is Ground level. Position 0.0 on Z Axis

2) Z Axis remains constant, whereas X & Y don't.

3) Avatar/Prop Templates automatically Snap to Grid on the World Axis, when Double-clicked.

I haven't got Cris's Tut Open. However IMO, the Ball will always Snap to Grid on the World Axis Position 0.0 on Z Axis when Double-clicked & not on top of the Box. It needs to be moved via Gizmo Move Tool.

Cris's Opening Tut is a good one, since it gets your head around 3D space. Up/Down (Z). Left/Right (X). Front/Back. (Y).

The Grid & World Axis are always there. You choose whether or not to show them.

I find Grid Spacing 250 & Size 150 fits most scene building scenarios for me.

BTW - The word Tutor below my Avatar refers to the number of Posts, not that that I'm capable of teaching anything Wink I just deal with the simple basic stuff.

I worked with automotive CAD systems for 25 yrs & quite familiar with coordinate systems.

In the tutorial, Cris creates & clones several cubes, then group selects all of them & snaps to grid in the z axes @ 100 units several times. He said, snap to grid, not me. I can't do that & wondered why he could. X & Y are no problem but not Z.

I thought it might be he used iClone 4 & I'm using iClone 5. I also considered my hardware. I've worked with video editing software that has clashed with hardware so that thought crossed my mind, too. But, I think it's just a software change from v4 to v5. V5 doesn't function as v4 does in the tutorial & it stump me.

As a newbie, when something like this comes up, I find myself wondering what I've done wrong & spend time trying to solve a phantom issue. As I use the software more I'll know what to expect.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
