| Hi, I bought iClone to create custom characters for my business. I need to create a library of custom clothes, accessories, props and motions. I'm starting with the clothing, but I'm having trouble. How do I do this? I have Paint as an image editor. Is there only certain image editors that work with Clone Cloth? If so, can I download one for free? I watched the tutorial, but when I click launch, it does nothing. Should it automatically find my image editor on the computer or should I do something to link it to iClone? As I mentioned before, I'm interested in creating custom content for all categories: clothes, motion, accessories and props. I'm learning DAZ Studio in order to create custom hair, accessories and props and motion editor for custom motions. Are these the only software pkgs I have to master to be able to create custom content? Am I on the right track? Please let me know additional software that will help me in my quest. Thanks for your help. Thanks.

| Hi, To be honest with you, Paint really doesn't cut it as an Image Editor. It is not impossible to create custom textures with it but it won't be as easy as using a fully featured product like Photoshop, PaintShop Pro etc. An essential feature of texture creation is Layers so you really need a product that has the ability to do that. I know of one totally free package that is very good and that is called Paint.Net. This contains many advanced features of the more expensive products, including Layers and is well worth checking out. To be able to use the Launch button in iClone you will have to set an Image Editor to use first. Just go to Preferences (Hammer icon, top right) and select the .EXE of your Image Editor in the box provided. When it comes to creating custom props, iClone has a built in system called 3D Blocks which will enable you to create an endless variety of new props and scenes which again can be custom textured in an Image Editor. You mention Daz Studio and this can be used with 3DXchange to convert many of the 3D products available from the Daz store or from the net for use in iClone, but you can't really make brand new custom content with it. For that you will need a dedicated 3D Modelling program. Again these range from the free Wings3D through the excellent mid priced Carrara right up to 3DS Max which costs $1000's. For anyone new to custom content creating I would suggest learning to create textures will be the best place to start and almost everything in iClone can be customised this way. Also try and learn the Motion Editor which is a fantastic way to create custom animations and poses for your characters and as part of iClone doesn't require any further outlay.

I agree Peter that Carrara is excellent for creating props etc however I have had problems exporting the finished object throught 3D Exchange into IClone especially if you used a Boolean Object or Metablob Object. The problem is both with the textures which come out black and another problem I have is if some thing is made up of say 4 cylinders and 2 spheres when you export from Carrra or Vue for that matter some of the items disappear from the finished article. The 4 cylinders and 2 spheres all show up in the table under the 3d root to the right but on the main view scree the do not appear at all. It really is very frustrating.

If I get Carrara installed on my computer I'll check out the problem you are having. Last time I exported from Carrara to 3DXchange I don't remember having those issues. EDIT: I just tried a quick test in Carrara. I created a sphere and 2 cylinders, textured them and exported as .OBJ. Opened in 3DXchange and everything was visible and correctly textured. No problems at all.

The problem seems to be when I try to export as 3ds Pete I must admit I didn't try as OBJ from Carrera I'll give that a try from Carrera however still a problem when using Vue as a 3ds export and only other available option in Vue when I want to export the entire scene is as Lightwave LWS which is not supported by 3d Exchange. However thanks for the tips most appreciated .

I always use .OBJ to export from Carrara. 3DS seems very problematic and best to avoid if possible. Good luck.
