Hi,
I apologize if this is not the appropriate place to post my question, but I was wondering what the difference between the iClone software and 3DXchange were. I am looking for a software that I can import my non-humanoid character (.fbx file) with it's animations and add additional (premade) animations to its rig for use in unity. Which of these software, if any would be appropriate? Thanks in advance!

the pro and pipeline versions of 3DXchange enables you to import 3D models from other software for use in iClone. the pipeline version of 3DXchange enables you to export iclone models and animations for use in other software However you need to own the export version of the iClone models which are about double the price of the version that can only be used in iClone Hope that helps edit Oh, and basically, the iclone software enables you to use those models to make animated movies and images

Neither one is what you need. Non-biped characters are rather problematic to work with in 3DXchange. 3DXchange is the import/export component, and iClone is an animation player/creator. Both are geared towards standard bipeds.
You sort of could, but it wouldn't be worth the time and money. And it would severely compromised.
Do your animations match your character? I would suggest checking out Blender.

By the way, the characters that I want to use are bi-pedal, but the problem is they don't seem to match a standard human rig. For example they are slouching or have a weapon in their hands. This seems to cause issues when I want to attach a Unity mecanim animation to them to standardize my animations to all the models. (I have a set of characters that have specialized spell animations, but I want to add standard animations such as jumping to all of them) The 3DXchange description says I can import "non-human" bipedal characters and make them ready for iClone motion and then export them as an fbx. So in theory I should be able to take a character with a set of premade animations, import it into 3DxChange, add more animations and then export it them into Unity and repeat this process for all my characters. Would that be a correct assumption? I really appreciate your responses, thank you!

That extra information is helpful!
It sounds more doable if your actually using something bipedal, slouched or not.
Basically 3DXchange Pro or Pipeline can import and re-target rigs and animations to their own skeleton, but only if they are bipedal humanoid. No other type can be re-targeted.. So, you could retarget all of your characters and animations to a common rig that way. You would need the "Pipeline" version to export your stuff back out for Unity.
Have a look at this:

Hi I have only done a little exporting for use in Unity so I can't really answer the first part. But I think really (and this may not be completely correct) without iClone there is little point in owning 3DXchange. It is really a tool that is meant to enable you to import models from other software for use in iClone. Certainly you can import models (through 3DXchange) into iclone, animate them, texture them etc, in iClone and then export them (through 3DXchange) along with those animations/textures for use in Unity. In iClone you can use the animation tools to create your own animations or you can purchase pre made animations (export versions) in the store. Edit Having said that I know that it is possible to add textures and pre-made animations to a model in 3DXchange as well so possibly you may not need iClone. Haven't tried it without iclone myself.

It actually will not work without iClone pro I have been in the situation where iClone was not installed and found this when moving stuff off my SSD to data drive
