My motherboard crashed and I just replace it.  I made not other changes at this time, except the mobo.

The system restore process is no where as simple as the old XP days.

I am looking to install a solid state drive = Crucial 256GB.

Thought I would ask to see, if anyone else has experience with the SS drives.

I realize rendering speed is a function of the Cores in the processor, but I am interested to know if working within the iclone prior to rendering out the videos would be improved.

I know the gamers are into the SS drives, at least that is my understanding.  I know they boot extremely fast.

Anyway, the drive I am looking at is around $200 and I can acquire a 4TB 7200 hard drive for that.

It would be nice to read information from other iclone devs about the value or lack of value of using a solid state drive, etc.

I have no experience with SS drives so it will be interesting to learn from people using them.

They are a hot item.  I went into Frys yesterday and they said they were completely sold out.

I know the gamers are really hot on them, but I'm in the dark with iclone use.

I could be spitballin' here, but I imagine if SS is something gamers seem to swear by, it's probably good for iClone. Smile

I just off the phone with a gamer.  He has a 128 GB SS Drive and loves it.  He said it loads the OS in about 4 seconds, and he uses 7200 RPM drives with 64 MG cache.  He indicates he doesn't notice any slow down with his HDD as far as playing games concerned.

He also said, upgrading his computer has been a whiz with SS drive.  He says upgrading is always a thing gamers have to expect.   He only keeps OS and MSFT Office on the SS drive.  All data on hard drives.

iClone creates temp files, so you might see some improvement if the temp directory is on your SSD.

I believe that any video files used as texture are streamed from disk, so that may also make a difference. Then again, it's better to have your data on a separate drive.

When I built a new system about a year ago, I considered using an SSD, but there were reported reliability issues, so I decided against it. However, things may have improved.

They seem to be popular with the business community....our eldest just got a laptop by Lenova (Thinkpad) - and it has a SS drive.  Because he stores most stuff in "the cloud", it's not a big deal.

For me - I have 5 internal hard drives, each with 1TB.  I keep them pretty full with material, so for me....the lack of space is an issue.  My C drive is 700 GB full and it's just programs and RL content.  If I kept the RL content on another drive, I still would have more than the 256 GB.  So the storage size is an issue.

Although I've never used a solid state drive yet, I can tell you that with all the stuff I've done for my BSGWars project, one of my 1TB external hdd's is already about to burp. Smile

SSD drive will improve the speed of Iclone for sure. I have a 64gb ssd just for Iclone. Firstly the program opens in a second, literally. Everything else opens up very quickly. I had Iclone installed on a normal HD and my 64 bit version was running at 10 or so Frames Per Second. Switched to a SSD and now I run over 64fps constantly. I would strongly recommend it. I also use a 128 gb SSD for my boot drive and my temp folder drive. So, Iclone on my machine runs on SSD.

Alienware 15, i7 4710hq, GTX 970m, 16gb ram, 4k display, 1.5TB SSD raid.

+100 for SSDs.

I expect rendering speeds would be nearly unchanged.

But "system responsiveness" will be noticably improved.

Boot times; much faster.  Application launch times; much faster.  Play games; new levels load much faster.

In addition to my SSD, I bought one for my son's "old" computer for Christmas, and he can really feel the difference.  It's a tangible improvement, and his computer is based on an AMD Athlon64 (dual core) with only a moderate graphics card (Radeon 6850).

Tip:  Do not overfill them.  It's a long technical discussion, but they don't like to be filled to capacity.  Keep "data" on other drives.

Tip:  Do not degraf them.  It makes no improvement since they have "zero" latency and file fragmentation simply isn't an issue.
